Australian Alternative Varieties
When thinking about Australian wine, grape varieties like Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc are likely top off mind. These are indeed the most grown grape varieties. However, Australia also has a tendency of trying out a lot of other grape varieties. A part of this, they also have the yearly Australian Alternative Variety Wine Show, that judges the best wines made from non-mainstream and emerging grape varieties. During this masterclass we will look into these “alternative" grape varieties, their history and of course we will taste some excellent examples.

About Marije Bockholts (stage 3 MW-student)
I’ve started off on another career path, but during a trip to New Zealand in 2002 I was intrigued by a wine tasting I did and when I got back, I started my first wine course. From there it got a little out of hand. In 2014 I became a Weinakademiker and now I’m in the last stage of the Master of Wine classification, the Research Paper. During my studies I’ve travelled a lot, including some visits to Australia. The stories from wine makers and the wines I’ve tasted inspired me and showed the big diversity this country has to offer. Therefor I chose this theme when I was asked to give a masterclass for the Weinakademiker Club.
