Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are among the international superstars of the wine world. Both varieties thrive in a relatively cool climate and are often found together in winegrowing regions. Like few other grapes, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are capable, if in good hands, to produce single variety wines that reflect their origin (terroir) and excel in finesse, freshness and flavour complexity. As such, this cool climate power couple has an almost unparalleled appeal to winemakers and wine lovers globally.

During the masterclass, Master of Wine Job de Swart takes you on a journey along the most important cool climate areas for still wines of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Europe. He discusses the impact of soil, plant material (clones), vineyard management and vinification on the wine styles. Great attention is paid to the Côte d'Or, but Job will also speak extensively about emerging European wine regions. These become increasingly worth exploring because of the high prices for Burgundy!

Focus questions:
What are the grape attributes of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir respectively?
What are the most important cool climate regions, besides Burgundy, for the production of still wines of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Europe?
Which viticulture and winemaking methods do producers use to achieve a certain quality and style?
How does climate change affect the plants, vineyard management and style of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines?

Wine tasting
We will taste at least 12 high-quality still wines, of which 6 Chardonnay and 6 Pinot Noir, from different European countries, in various styles. The selection consists of Burgundian classics and rising stars from other cool climate areas. The wines are poured blind. Can you spot the Burgundies?
